Hi guys, its time to pick up a nice LCD for my college dorm. looking at the samsung 710N http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-001-158&depa=1
Was wondering if its pretty common to get dead pixels when you order an LCD (newegg only replaces them for 8 or more), and i would really hate to have a little dead dot in the middle of my screen. Also, which is better, a high (500:1) contrast ratio, or lower (600:1) ? |

I would recommend that if you want to inusre yourself against a dead pixel then stop by either best buy or circuit city and make sure you get the extended warranty. I worked at best buy for awhile, part of the service plan is that they replace the lcd after only one dead pixel.. of course no one ever bought the warranties but I always thought that they were a good deal for lcd's. BTW I would like it known I am not a BB lover... matter of fact I personally hate the company but some warranties do have their benefit. I really don't think you have to worry about a dead pixel until after extended use, which will take you past Newegg's return period.

I've seen around 50 LCDs (monitors and laptops) and have only ever noticed one dead subpixel on a laptop

Higher ratio is better.

I kept reading "dead pixel this, dead pixel that" when LCD's where being discussed. I went ahead and purchased a Dell 2100FP anyway. I've looked hard for dead pixels, trying several different screens and test patterns. If my LCD's has them, I haven't seen any.
I finally said heck with it. I was looking so hard in different areas of the screen, but I wasn't looking at the overall picture. I like this moniter better than my old 22" Cornerstone CRT. No regrets on getting my 2100FP. |

Also, do you care about the response times at all? If so look for the 16ms and 12ms ones on the market. I believe BenQ, Samsung and LG are pretty good in this department. (don't know much about LCD's though)
