well I was playing it last night...doing pretty well when someone joins the server...usually it takes like 1 second to load the skin/model (since I don't have precaching of all the skins/models on) but this time it took like 15 seconds...it then unfroze...then did it again...I could hear the drive constantly accessing...so I just did ctrl+alt+del and killed it...I also noticed the game took much longer to load than before...however any other game or program that I use on the drive doesn't really have this problem...the noises that it makes is also in a pattern...it's hard to describe it in text but it sounds like it's loading for 2 seconds...studders for 5...and does that in a loop...

I also use the game's editor quite a lot and can't really get it to load within a reasonable time...before it loaded quickly as usual but it was also corrupting some of the saved maps along with some of the autosaves...since then I've been saving my maps on a seperate drive and no more corruption....

everything else on the drive works without a problem and as far as I can tell...ut2k4 is the only program that does this...is it possible that the part of the drive that it's on is bad? it's been literally like a year since I've last defragged (since then I've deleted and saved many many files for making space for new games)...I did that twice with diskeeper yesterday and it looking at the program's analysis it looks like the drive was never defragged in the first place...it seems to have absolutely no effect in defragging at all...is there anything else I can do? would reinstalling help?

Run diskcheck first to see if it picks up on any bad sectors, then defrag again. Make sure you choose the option for a thurough examination.

EDIT: woops. Never mind!! I should've read your (long) post!! :P Sorry...

When it comes to defragging, I believe that nothing beats Diskeeper. Give that a try. You will love it and thank it!
