When I first read the title of your post, I though you were going to be talking about F-22's. I was just talking to an Air Force buddy mine a couple days ago, so I guess that was still in my mind.

Nice article. Good job on leaving the question open whether the extra performance is worth it. The reason I often recommend the 16mb maxtor is because it gives pretty good speeds at a decent $ per gb ratio.

Thanks guys. I have no problem with anybody recommending anything (except Lexmark printers) but I just got tired of people saying that a 7200RPM drive "comes close" to the performance of a Raptor.

I ended up modifying this article to include some other stuff and make it less brand specific so that it could become a sticky in the storage forum at Sharky's.

Hopefully it helps some people out.
