max memory for compaq R3000z

I was told when i bought the R3000z that the max memory could be 2gigs.
I called compaq and they told me 1280mb.

they said that the 1 gig stick could be put in either slot, but only a 256 could be in the other.

I am wondering why I can't put a 1gig stick in both.

thanks for any help

This doesnt make alot of sense.......so i did some digging.

And what i came up with is for some reason your capped at 1280....i didnt find a workaround on any other forum or site, though I would suggest giving the compaq tech support a call and see if they have a workaround?

just outta curiosity what do you need 2 gigs for in a lappy anyways =)

It's 2 GB... the second slot, underneath the keyboard, is a bit of a pain to get to, so I think that's why they tell people that way... It can be done. I did it myself... 2 x 512 MB. And I know some who have 2 GB installed.

2 gigs in laptop

I need all the ram I can get to run Catia V5 Cad program. It sucks more memory than any other program I have come across.

thank you for the help.

That is what I was thinking and I had previously called compaq and he told me 1280mb but I didn't believe him.

I have however heard that it does void the warranty (taking off the keyboard, which involves taking off other parts of the lappy) so be warned. That said, I did that only about a month after I got mine! :P It's no biggie... As long as your hands are steady and be cautious, the process is fine. I think in my review, I put a link on visual guide (published by HP!) on how to access that memory slot!

Here's the link. It's a pdf file.

EDIT: Be careful in steps 8 and 9. Try not to jimmy it too much.
