i'm totally for vinyl... i think this picture is all i need to explain why:
![]() it sits in my basement and i've yet to hear a cd-based system that rivals it. Only thing it's missing is the Voice of the Theater horns and it would be perfect... someday maybe for now the Altec 808's will do. |

LPs vs CDs
I am a lover of old school music mostly sold on vinyl from 1965 to 1995.
I have seen lots of technical comparisons between CD and LP media and I feel that the real issue is the way the music is edited and mixed. I have many examples of “original” or so called “re-mastered” recordings on CD that are not original at all. The low end can sound fuzzy and exaggerated, the brass instruments often can be too harsh, the violins appear sweet, etc. My overwhelming preference therefore is to do my own high quality digitizing of vinyl and then burn it to CD. In that way I get the best of both worlds. I get a true rendition of the vinyl with little or no loss of quality and sometimes even an improvement. There is the undisputed convenience of CD and IPOD where I can take it anywhere and play it anywhere. Imagine walking around with a bunch of records, let alone allowing those beauties to be played of some half assed TT. No chance. The “original” original recorded music is probably kept on several very high quality 30 IPS real-to-real tapes in a guarded vault somewhere. The recordings were on several individual tracks from mikes placed in different locations. Editors go in and re-mix the tracks and produce new and “improved” copies which don’t too often resemble the familiar stuff we have known and loved. In the world we live in today digitized music on CDs and IPODs are the media of choice. However there seems to be a great conspiracy among people who control original copyrights to rearrange and remix and thus give us a nothing less than regurgitated trash. ![]() |

While I enjoy LP's I think CD's are the better way to go. I just enjoy the digital format.
