I remember hearing from one of my marketing teachers (whose an audiophile and owns Naim speakers) that record players still sound better than cd players. He said the only reason CD's are more popular are the portability/convenience and the media doesn't degrade when played.
Discuss. Oh, let's throw the Nyquist Theorem and DACS into it! |

Nyquist and Dacs ARE why Vinyls are "better" than CDs....
I like my digital, but I can admit that a $3000 turntable sounds better than a $400 CD player. Then again, Vinyl will NEVER beat the accuracy, detail, and deep black background (and convenience) of CD. But, Vinyl (if on the right system) DOES sound more realistic and "live" due to the nyquist effect mostly. With a proper DAC nowadays, you can get VERY good results. All in all, my preference is for CD. The only advantage I can see for vinyl is a SLIGHTLY more realistic sound. Then again....what about HDCDs? or SACDs? or DVDA? hehe... -Z |

CD's. Because I've never bothered with Vinyl - parents have some old LP's around but no equipment to use them.

CDs are obviously my choice, but vinals are fun sometimes. I have a decent sized stack of records myself and it is good to put on my dark side of the moon vinal and listen to it through my late 70s 5-way 500W Kenwood speakers that my dad used in college.

Very interesting discussion so far.
![]() So would a 2 channel SACD/DVD-A disc be better sounding than a record? Do you think the Nyquist Theorem is perhaps faulty? (you need MORE sampling than what they recommend) |

Hmm good point soupnazi. I think that it just gets to a point where the human ear can only slightly tell the difference between media/output quality and the difference on such a high scale becomes negligible.

I don't know if this applies or is bogus, but I recall one of those $500 tone arm guys takling about one of the main disadvantages of CD's being prob-
lems with accurate sampling of the higher frequencies. |

Come on, lets get real here. The only time an LP would sound better than a CD (and this would even be rare) is if the orignal that the CD was recorded from sucked. Most new music does not have this problem, some older CDs were not that good but they were still better than LPs.
I think you teacher is on crack. He needs to get out of the classroom and step into the real world. Or he needs to step ahead twenty years and get his head out of his nostalgic ass. |
