I'm going to buy a Laptop to use in my traveles, I'm needing advice to help me fit my needs.

1. Must be truly moble, would prefer a connection,
that works like a cell phone.
2. 3 gig or larger processor
3. DVD burner 16X
4. 100MB or larger harddrive
5. 1 or 2 Gigs of Ram
6. 17 or bigger screen
7. XP Pro for OS ( no other software needed)
8. Drive for 3 1/2 Floppy
9. USB 2 ports 2 ea
10. High end sound card
11. High end graphics card (gamine when bored)
12. Need 110 volt, 12volt, and internal batt.
13. Budget $5000.00 us

This is the basic, I can add toys later.
Any advice will be most welcome

Dell's Inspiron XPS may not meet all your specific requirements, but might still be a good fit. Alienware would probably be the best bet for meeting your specs, but I cannot vouch for the quality of their products/service.

Well I have some bad news for you, first off overall you wont find a mobile laptop with those specs period, and if you did it was cost quite a bit more than five grand. Secondly lets get onto the specs you want.

2. 3ghz processor would be a pentium 4. You kind of are cancelling out the "true mobile" with the p4, as it sucks the battery life. If you want a true mobile you need a dothan core centrino processor.

3. No laptop comes with a 16x burner, you might find an 8x burner in a very high end laptop, but most will be 4x, if not 2x for some companies.

4. I assume you meant 100gb or larger HD. AFAIK there are no laptop HD over 100gb in 7200rpm variation, and afaik they've only recently came out with a 100gb notebook drive. You're going to have to go with a 60gb HD for 7200rpm (4200rpm is so slow its not funny, which is standard laptop speed).

5. You said mobile yet you want a desktop replacement? What could you possibly be doing on the go that requires 2gb of ram?

6. 17" will be largest you find, and even then those are mainly on desktop replacement laptops (read: not mobile as you originally wanted). You're looking at a 15.4" or lower on 99.9% of what most people would consider an ultra-portable laptop.

8. Most laptops dont come with floppy built in as most people dont use floppy anymore.

High-end sound/video card.... best atm is the 9700 mobile, they're coming out with the 9800 mobile soon (unless they recently have). Not really super high end by todays standards compared to desktops but they are nice. Sound card you will have integrated sound, most likely stereo 2.1. Creative just released a pcmcia based a2 zs card but even then most audiophiles wouldnt consider audigys high end.

Overall, with what you asked for, is a dream of most people. It would be a custom built job (as in making new products that arnt out on the market, complete redesign of a laptop case as we know it, etc) that no-one would have the resources for other than an actual laptop company, and I highly doubt they'd make one laptop for a random person.

Realistically, also, if you're aiming to travel, I feel that you've set your sights way too high. As other posters have noted, a 17" screen implies a huge notebook. When I say huge, I mean more or less 8 pounds or more. Probably more like 10 for the feature set you're aiming for.

And, ten pounds, while it doesn't sound heavy, is rather heavy when you're actually travelling. I don't consider something of that weight a travel computer - it travels in the sense that it's moveable. But is it convenient or realistic? I'm not sure, necessarily.

The Dell XPS, Alienware, and VoodooPC laptops are among the ones that meet /most/ of your requirements. However, they will weigh quite a bit, as I have already noted. Plus, they have very limited battery life and produce large amounts of heat - if you're travelling, you can't put them on your lap and I'd be wary of putting them on a plane traytable - your neighbor probably won't be all that happy with you, given their size.

The major and first compromise of laptops is weight v. power. Lighter weight means less to carry, more portability, but you sacrifice some computing power. heavy weight gives you computing power without real portability.

But, to better meet your needs, the first thing that you should clarify is what you intend to do in terms of travels and moving the computer. And, once you've considered that, also note what kinds of things you want to do on your computer (i.e. gaming or graphics editing or whatever)
