Angry drive crash- please help me!!

Hi there,

Seeking some advice with a lil tech issue i got here.
Im not holding out much hope for rescue here but
willing to give anything a try.

Went to bed the other night after an hour or so of online
gaming, powered down in the normal way. Booted up the
next day and zonk.. no boot.. freezing half way.. even
in safe. Tried again later and it booted but
everything was taking ages to load.. icons etc. Now
i cant access anything on my secondary drive, its not
finding the shortcuts and telling me drive d is not
formatted!!

Nothing i had been doing had needed access
to drive d. Its my main drive for storage.. and
although i backed up most of it about 2 months ago ive
still got a few tracks i been working on, poetry etc
that i really want to rescue. I have tried the drive
in my bros pc with exactly the same result.. so the
drive is certainly the issue. Ive done a full scan
etc and can find no errors on my c that might have
caused this.

Like i said... even if i could just save
a few mb of work id be happy. Ive tried accessing it
using another pc in msdos (my pc has no floppydrive)and
ive tried using spinwrite which seems to have no problems
accessing the drive and reading it but i still cant figure out how
to access the data and retrive it! Any suggestions how imight try to save
this before i chuck the ****** thing in the bin!!

Im running xp home, p4 2.8, 768ddr,

MSI MS-6714 Mainboard (845GVM-L)
Geforce mx440,

the drive is a maxtor d540x-4d 5400rpm 60gb

Im not that tech savy but with guidance i can manage most stuff.

Any help will me met with great happiness, even if you just put
me outa my misery and tell me to take out the hammer!!

cheers in advance!

Mark

Welcome Marc!
First of all, is this a first time this happened?
What PSU (power supply unit) do you have? Your HDD seems to have corrupted.
If you don't mind formatting, that's what I'd recommend first. When you do format, make sure to update to SP2 first, all critical updates, and then install your mobo drivers, and then onto video card drivers etc.

Good luck!

Peter

Hi Peter,

thanks for the reply!

Yep, This is the first time this has happened.
I dont know wht PSU i have... how do i tell? theres a lil red window on it sayin 230.. is that it?
I will reformat primary drive and reinstall if you think it might help. I hadnt updated to sp2 b4 as id been told the firewall was very unreliable and caused conflicts. Will do this time.

Ill let u know how i go.

thanks again

Mark

Regarding PSU, what brand is it? And how much wattage (max.) does it claim?
Crappy PSU's can do loads of damage to several hardwares... If it's 230W like you suggested, that sounds way too low for a P4 system.

good luck on your reinstall.

Hi

Only one i have is spinrite data recovery (grc.com)...but as the damn machine didnt come with 3.5drive i cant boot to dos...less i use the recovery cd...but its not a clean boot. Cant see the drive in dos either from that. I ve run spnrite from cd iso on level 4 (took 18 hrs) but windows still wont see the drive. im gonna try it on another machine as a primary drive and boot with floppy to dos see if i can get at it. But i wont be able to save much of the 60gb with a 1.44mb diskette. thats if it even works. Am i tryin the right things guys? Any suggestions for a good error checker?

Well if you can't see the drive from windows or dos... then you can't salvage anything from it. Unless you send it to a data recovery center, but believe me... it's not worth it. Waaay too expensive.
