IBM R40 Fan Problem
Fan runs as soon as I plug AC adapter in, I don't think it's a heat problem because it can't be hot if it's off a few days. Plug in AC and it sounds like it's going to spin off the table. I tried BIOS update controller update with no luck. Called IBM of course the warrenty just ran out. Could the fan be bad? If anyone has an idea that would be great.

So what exactly is the problem? The fan seems to be spinning too fast?

Are there any settings under power management in the control panel perhaps?

There are some settings there but nothing about the cpu, it's like turn off monitor after 15 minutes and standby after 30 minutes, nothing under anvanced settings either.

Well if the software is all set correctly it is possible that the temperature sensor is going bad (or got moved to touch something hot like a hdd). See if you can find it and/or the fan inside of the case if you're comfortable looking around in there.

I was already in there, I found the fan it plugs right into the system board for power. Not sure about the temp sensor will have to do some research.

I have the same problem on my Thinkpad T41 on boot and I have heard of at least one other person with the a CMOS-related problem.
Could it be that this is not a fan issue (I've never heard of these going in Thinkpads) but instead a virus (or other nefarious issue) that attacks and wounds the CMOS battery or other CMOS related area? My T41 still runs btw and I still don't know what it is I need to fix and can't really stand any time without it as it is my only good machine. Thoughts? |
